Who we are?

History

The National Council of Nigeria Muslim Organization was inaugurated in Washington DC in 1976, with only three foundation chapters from New Jersey, Washington DC and New York. The first constitutional conference was thereafter held in Newark, New Jersey.

The initial constitution established the offices of General Secretary and the Mission General. The General Secretary was empowered to manage the administrative affairs while the Mission General, had the ultimate authority which covers both the spiritual and religious activities of the organization.

In the late 1980s, with the growth in the population of Nigerian Muslims in the USA, member chapters increased to five Nigerian Muslim organizations/ Masjids, namely- New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Baltimore and Washington DC. However, Not long after this, there was a brief lull in the activities of the National Council due to several local problems that the member chapters were grappling with.

In the early 1990s, membership increased to six chapters with the addition of the Chicago Chapter. A new constitution was drafted and the Organization was incorporated in January 1995 as non-profit Islamic organization, thus marking another landmark in the organization’s history. The six chapters were working with this constitution and at the same time struggling to keep their respective local chapters and National Council alive.

In the year 2000, a discussion by the Mission General with some other Nigerian Muslim Organizations, brought about the conference of July 2001 with more chapters and new faces into the organization. They all agreed on writing a new constitution that will spell out the purpose, the affairs, directions and administration with their functions.

After several meetings of the new “Constitution Drafting Committee” and a couple of general meetings, which included delegates from several chapters, the new constitution was ratified in March 2002 at the

Newark, NJ. meeting.The new officers were then selected according to the new constitution at the General meeting which took place in Providence, RI. On September 13, 2003.

Alhamdulillah, this organization has since been improving in all areas in being a parent body for all Nigeria Muslim organizations, and all three branches (Shura Board, Executive, and Board of Trustee) are working together so that the NCNMO in the USA will be like the United Nations for Nigerian Muslim Organizations InshaAllah.

All praise is due to Allah , today, the NCNMO in the USA is proud to have several active Members-Chapters, and a yearly program for our children and young adults (Platform Program).

We are a non-profit organization ,and we accept donations to help continue our programs for our youths and member chapters.
